Our Mission and Our Passion

Every day we are bombarded with news of murder, death, rape, crime and war.  Only rarely do we hear stories about people rising above violence and hatred to resolve conflicts.  PEACETALKS is changing that.

PEACETALKS creates radio programs about people finding unique, creative and uplifting ways of moving beyond violence.  It will explore in-depth issues, ideas and practices that are at the heart of the global struggle for peace and justice.

PEACETALKS creates inspiring, thought-provoking and perhaps disturbing radio about the horrors of hatred and victories of peace.  It tells the stories of people who have overcome violence and found the courage to make peace in their lives and in their communities.

Radio is a powerful tool that has the ability to reach a wide audience in a very personal way.  It has the power to create compelling "theater of the mind".  It moves us.  PEACETALKS believes that it can be a persuasive tool for social change and for personal transformation.  PEACETALKS will travel the world to bring to public radio the best stories  large and small, of people struggling to move beyond violence.

We need a counterpoint to the news emphasis on violence.  We need to show our children that there are non-violent ways of resolving bitter conflicts, and we need to shift our thinking, shift our listening, and shift our perspective.

• From The Peaceable Kingdom Playground in Pennsylvania ... to Pollsmoor Prison, South Africa

• From confronting domestic violence at INFOTEKA in Bosnia ... to the Network of Victim Assistance in the United States

• From a listening project in a maximum security prison ... to efforts to abolish landmines worldwide

• From a women's credit-and-savings project in Vietnam ... to a forgiveness play in El Salvador

PEACETALKS explores the alternatives to violence and expands the listener's sense of the possibilities for peace in the world today whether in the field of business, education, politics, homemaking, or the arts.
